MSU Brings German to Local First Graders

Language learning starts early at Sudduth Elementary, where MSU faculty and students visit every Friday for a lively German lesson. Mrs. Gartman’s class of 19 first graders sings, plays, and practices new words each week.

The lessons are part of the Goethe-Institut’s SPARK program, which introduces children to German through fun and interactive activities. They practice greetings, colors, animals, numbers, and even simple conversations like “How are you?” Songs and games keep the energy high and help the language stick.

Research shows that starting another language early sharpens problem-solving skills and boosts memory, setting children up for success in and out of school)(Psychology Today, 2025).

Each visit is led by MSU German-language students and as well as faculty from across campus. This initiative gives college students a chance to share their knowledge while showing younger learners the fun and excitement of learning another language.

The goal of these early lessons is to spark curiosity, build confidence, and plant the seed for continued language study. Mrs. Gartman has already noticed several students thriving, with some even practicing outside of class on their own. She has encouraged parents to nurture their children’s growing interest and natural talent for language learning.
