Bulldog Explorers Honored for Community Language Access
Led by Kelly Moser, associate professor in the Department of Classical & Modern Languages and Literatures, and Kenneth Anthony, professor and head of the Department of Teacher Education and Leadership, Bulldog Explorers was created to expand early access to world language and cultural learning at a time when many elementary programs have reduced world language and social studies content. The initiative gives families meaningful opportunities to explore languages, traditions and communities beyond the traditional classroom setting.
In partnership with the Starkville Public Library, the program offers monthly themed “travel kits” that function as portable cultural learning experiences. Each kit focuses on a specific country or region and includes carefully selected children’s books, introductory vocabulary with pronunciation guides, maps, country fact sheets, crafts, recipes, music suggestions and hands-on activities.
By centering family participation, Bulldog Explorers encourages parents and caregivers to learn alongside their children. The program strengthens connections between the university and the local community while fostering curiosity, empathy and intercultural awareness among young learners. Through sustained collaboration and accessible resources, Bulldog Explorers demonstrates Mississippi State’s commitment to extending its land-grant mission beyond campus and into the communities it serves.
