Bachelor of Arts

  • Major: B.A. awarded upon successful completion of a minimum of 123 credit hours, which includes: University core requirements, *Primary language credit hour requirements* (varies depending upon language); 18 credit hours at the 3000-level or higher and 32 credit hours in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Minor: A minor in Foreign Languages with concentrations in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish may be obtained upon satisfactory completion of 18 semester hours in one target language. A minor with concentration in Classics requires 15 hours, 12 of which much be Greek or Latin courses beyond the first year; the remaining course may be any FL Classics course.

    According to AOP 12.08 the following conditions apply to minors:
    * At least one-half of the hours in the undergraduate minor and two thirds of the hours in a graduate minor must be taken at MSU.
    * A minimum grade point average of 2.0 is required in all courses taken as part of an undergraduate minor, while a minimum 3.0 is required in all courses taken as part of a graduate minor.

Master of Arts

  • Admission: International students must have a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 525 PBT, 193 CBT, or 70 iBT; or IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) score of 6 or more to be considered. Students accepted on provisional admission status must receive a 3.0 GPA on the first 9 hours of graduate level courses. (Courses with an ā€œSā€ grade, transfer credits, credits earned while in Unclassified status cannot satisfy this requirement.
  • Assistantship: Application materials must be submitted by April 1. Students admitted on provisional status are not eligible for assistantships.
  • Thesis Option: M.A. awarded upon successful completion of 30 credit hours, which includes: 24 credit hours of coursework and 6 credit hours of thesis research.
  • Non-thesis Option: M.A. awarded upon successful completion of 33 credit hours and a comprehensive oral examination based upon all coursework and/or the Departmental Graduate Reading List.
  • Minor: A minimum of 21 credit hours in one language must be taken for the M.A., which allows a student to work in a minor field, such as History, Education, English as a Second Language, and Foreign Language Methodology.
  • M.A. degrees awarded in French, German and Spanish.
